Description |
This birdhouse was made by Jackson Pollock, probably in 1947, perhaps for his pet crow, Caw-Caw. Pollock had tamed the bird not long after he and Lee Krasner moved to Springs in 1945. Photographs from 1946-47 show the crow perched on Krasner's head and in Pollock's hands. According to their friend, the painter Mercedes Matter, Caw-Caw was mischievous, pecking at the fabric on the tonneau roof of her car and pulling out the clothespins on the washing line so the laundry fell to the ground. Sometime after Pollock's death Krasner gave the birdhouse to her nephew, Ronald Stein, who returned it to the Pollock-Krasner House in 1998. By then it had fallen into disrepair. It was reassembled and stalilized in 2018 by Burton Van Deusen, a member of the East End Classic Boat Society, who specializes in restoring wooden vessels. Gift of Ronald J. Stein. |
