Description |
David Slivka was born in Chicago to Russian immigrant parents. From childhood he demonstrated talent in both the sculptural and pictorial arts. Somewhat of a nomad, he moved around the United States until the age of sixteen when he settled in San Francisco. Three years later he completed his first sculptural pieces for the Public Works of Art Project, followed by work for the WPA and the San Francisco World's Fair. By the 1930s he had developed a fascination with natural forms and phenomena. Later, even in his most abstract pieces, one can still sense the essence and contours of nature in his shapes. After serving in the Merchant Marine during World War II, Slivka moved to New York City. Through the years he worked in many media, from ink, crayon, pencil and watercolor, to wax, rope, clay, granite, bronze and wood. His ink drawings represent a melding of the organic and the abstract. He sought to infuse his art with spontaneity, accompanied by the freedom to accept or reject the accidents which emerged as the result. Gift of Charlotte Slivka. |
